Guest Post: Clever Plumage

Well hello there, My name is Hillery. I am a 24 year old Georgia peach, transplanted to the Great White North, where I live with my super awesome Canadian husband James, and our sweet little black cat, Nori. You can often find me on lazy days crafting and reading classic literature or taking long walks with the hubs and our camera, attempting to be photographically inclined.

Back in March I won Eva's awesome giveaway for two pouches of studs. I was so excited when I got them in the mail and got crafting right away and have put together a few projects with them. The one I want to share with you today is this cute little boho friendship bracelet accented with Eva's lovely studs and some pretty pheasant feathers from my Etsy shop

These little studs are so easy, you just need a pair of pliers, something to adorn, and you are good to go. Don't be surprised if you want to put studs on everything! So far I've made a few bracelets and adorned my camera strap! The possibilities are truly endless and it's a fun way to spend a rainy day.

If you'd like to get your hands on a bracelet like this you can check out my shop. Plus more to come as I update the shop. I am also offering a 15 % off discount for Runaway thrift readers with the coupon code RUNAWAY.

I hope you all have beautiful week and thanks for letting me stop by Eva!

Su·per·man Sunday: Biff, Brad, and Chip

It is slightly after 1 pm and I am just waking up. What a lazy day! Unfortunately this feeling is about to be short lived because I'm about to enter my finals week and I've already been staying up until the wee hours of the morning attempting to squeeze information into my head.
To lighten the gloomy finals mood laying over me I dug these guys up. I think it's my mom's but I thought the card was so funny I couldn't resist. Hallaluja to Biff, Brad, and Chip. You were just what the Dr. ordered!

And on a side note check out the Guest Post tomorrow from the March Studly contest winner!

Fringe Studded Leather Necklace: Styled

Hey guys! Remember this bad boy:

If not [tsk], no worries you can check the DIY page out here. If you do just keep on reading. When I put up this post I had a request to show the necklace styled with an outfit. It's taken me awhile, I'll admit, namely because I decided to ship it back to CA and into the hands of my best friend. I figured she'd be able to work some magic with it, and she did. Here's 2 laid back California looks. Hippie chic? What do you think?

Big thanks to my darling friend Kendal the model, and her roommate who played photographer for me! xox

My College Kitchen: Avocado

When I was little I had a book about this baby that would eat avocados and get super human strength. Combine that with fact the I used to think it sounded kind of like my name [Eva, pronounced Ava, and avocado] and nothing but fond memories come to mind when I cut into one of these fruits. And yes, it's a fruit, I googled it!

Why should you make avocado a regular snack you ask?! Because...
- avocados help you absorb antioxidants
-it's jam packed with healthy fats that will help you burn fat instead of store it
-its yummy
-promotes a healthy heart (beat beat)
-regulates blood sugar
-Vitamin E badass
-and more...

And if you don't want to eat it, mash it up and smear on your face for a vitamin packed facial mask that will hydrate your skin!

DIY: Tribal Cord Necklace

My day so far: gym at 6, floor fam breakfast 8, final geology presentation 9-10. Oye. More class to come and then a banquet later followed by some math and intense eBaying. I need a little DIY therapy, how about you?

Here's a little tribal necklace how-to. I used wood and shell beads, couldn't be happier! This is a no clasp necklace, but the way that I secured the cord to the wire isn't the most stable...click here for a better way to secure ends! And thanks to my darling model again, nothin like hot pink lipstick and bright blue eyes to jazz up a necklace. Or a lace dress for that matter!

My College Kitchen: Honey Yogurt and Strawberries

I feel like this breakfast is basically dessert eaten in the morning because its so sweet! So if you would also like a healthy yummy dessert this is perfecto! I don't just love warmer weather because its better, I love it because it means that fresh fruit prices drop. Yay! Monday I bought a box of strawberries and some honey yogurt...yum. This morning I decided to combine them and this delectable dish ensued. Enjoy!

Just chop up some strawberries and mix in with yogurt of choice! But honestly, why stop at strawberries?

Pressed Flowers

When I was little I found a little flower press in "Mamas Cupboard". It have four little red handles and and a woman picking flowers painted on it. My brother and I really weren't allowed to go in the cupboard but I was so captivated by all the wonderous things stashed away I sometimes couldn't resist. I remember walking around our garden and carefully selecting the flowers I wanted to press. I still think there is something very beautiful about pressed flowers. Better yet, you can use them for countless craft projects. Scrapbooking, greeting card, jewelry, collages, and much more...

Don't have a flower press? No worries! Select the flowers you fancy and sandwich them between two pieces of paper and press under a stack of books. You want to be sure that they are really weighted down. Walk away and come back a month later!
When I went to a crafts fair last weekend one man had a booth of all the things he made with pressed flowers! He was nice enough to let me snap a few pictures. Have you ever worked with pressed flowers??

Thrifted Find: Tapestry Belt

I scored this belt last summer for several bucks. Lately I've been seeing the style popping up on various websites, making me feel slightly cool. I love leather work and colors of the belt, not to mention how nicely it fits around my waist!
Can I please get a round of applause for my darling friend Chelsea? You may see her popping up time to time in my pictures as my dashing model!
I paired it with a simple white tunic and sandals, how would you style this thrifted find?

Superman Sunday: Lighting

Nothing like a line of disco balls to set the mood for the rest of the week. I can hear the music now... On the other hand we have some slick chandeliers that look like fountains dripping with silver. Can you picture one over your dinning room table? Lastly a classic chandelier will neverrrr steer you the wrong way.

My College Kitchen: Asparagus, pork, rice, and carrots

I saw a deal on asparagus at the grocery store and flew at it. I'm always adding frozen veggies to my dinners so when I see affordable fresh vegetables I buy them right away!

Veggies: Chop up some carrots and asparagus spears and drizzle some olive oil on them. Mix with salt and pepper, toss in a pan and leave in oven at 350 for 20 minutes.
Rice: If you don't know the rule of thumb of rice its simple. One cup of water, 1/2 cup of rice. Bring water to a boil, turn heat down and add rice. Cook for about 20 minutes with lid on. I add frozen peas and corn to steaming rice once its cooked and close the lid.
Pork: Saute some onion in a pan, once it is clear season each side of pork with a dash of Tuscan Seasoning by McCormick [OR just salt and pepper OR fav meat seasoning]. Cook with onions in butter or olive oil.

Dinner is served! Hope everyones Saturdays are going swimmingly!

Roxanne

I was watching The Voice this week and was impressed by the amazing voices but not really dazzled by anything new and unique. Then this chick came up and I fell in love, I love her version of Roxanne! I have the full recorded version and the live one for your viewing pleasure.

Hope you enjoy and thank god its Friday!!

DIY Leather Wrapped Bangle

When I think of posts to do I start writing them in my head. Today I realized that I always start my DIY projects with this super simple... But that's just because I actually do think that they are super simple! This one probably takes the cake in the simple department...a DIY leather wrapped bangle.
Put glue on the inside and outside of the bangle, you don't need to do the sides and only add glue in sections. Start the leather strip on the inside and don't worry if the strip is roughly cut!

I was going to cover the white bangle too, but then I thought they looked cute together like this! What do you think?

A Love of Knobs

Happy Wednesday! This beautiful weather we've had in Pullman has put me in such a great mood lately. I think the snow and wind and rain and general cold was starting to get me down a little. Yesterday I went on a 4 mile bike ride, the day before I meandered downtown to the used book store with my friend, and today I enjoyed lunch on top of our campus library. Sun, I missed you! With that being said, this post has nothing to do with good weather...

But it does have to do with this piece of advice: change the knobs on a piece of furniture you have, or add them. They can completely change its look and dress it up!

A few years ago my mom and I discovered the beauty of Athropologie's knob collection and we've never looked back. Theses two knobs are in my room back home. I remember when I bought the be-dazzled ones, I was so excited. They still make me break out in a big smile! [yes mom, one day I will come back for them ;-]
Last year when I was living in a little town house in San Francisco my roommate gave me her old desk. We fixed it up a little with the yellow knobs. I think they gave it a kick of life. Sadly I don't have a picture of it. I nabbed the knobs and we pushed the desk out on the curb when we moved out! The iron(?) stands below the knobs are shelf brackets, also found at Anthro. The shelving unit above the desk was pretty cute.

Remember, go frolick in the sun!

DIY: Cloth bracelet

Hey all! Sorry I've been MIA lately! I've honestly just been feeling a little burnt out. Also inspiration has been a little low so I've been trying to give myself a little more "me time" to create. ALSO to al the lovely people and blogs who participated in the 11 questions post, thanks! I enjoyed learning more about you!

Here's a super simple project, that, looking back would have looked super adorable with some bold printed fabric. I think I decided on the creme colored because I didn't want to take away from the button though...I'm a sucker for shiny.

I got this fabric for free from some brand new clothes someone was giving away and I've been saving the button for years. Cut a strip out of your fabric, thickness is whatever your preference is, but know that you have to double that because you fold the fabric in half.

Personally I love the rough look of this. You will have one clean edge from where you folded it and one frayed edge. Do a simple whip stitch to secure the rough edge.
TIP sew on button before you sew around the edges, and only on one side of the doubled fabric. This way you won't see the button stitching!

Button holes are easy, just nip a little hole where you want it and whip stitch around.

Thrifted Find: The Izzle

I would like to introduce you to my best find to date: the 16$ izzle [also known as an easel]. It has a few scratches and nicks but I love it all the same. It came with a complete set of untouched paints and 4 fantastic brushes. *drool* I was practically dancing out of the goodwill and forced a few high fives out of my friends. I mean...16 bucks?!?!? I promptly texted my mom and she sent me a fit pumping emoji icon. Well said mother.

I haven't painted in a long time and even then it was mixed medium but I supposed I'm just going to have to hike to the top of a mountain just to paint the view!

11 Questions Response

Awhile ago Debbie from In a Whirl of Inspiration included Runaway Thrift in a blog question thang. It took me awhile to respond, but here it is!Are you ready for some random stuff about me, myself, and I?

1. Disorganized, imaginative, distracted, tall, day-dreamer
2. If the person that I am, I would like to be...honest. Did I do that right?
3. I mean...Harry Potter obviously. Have you seen how Neville turned out?
4. My Halloween costumes normally stink but one year I was Vanna White. Classic.
5. Trying to keep up with my ideas.
6. The romantic in me says the Renaissance but lets be honest, it stunk. Probably the 80's to see my dad in bell bottoms.
7. Cheese. I love cheese.
8. The day is young but probably having my professor ask to keep my Geology paper because it was so amazing. It happened to be my first all nighter :-P
9. My dream dinner party? Probably one of my good friends from elementary school, my best friend now, my brother, some of my friends from school, and a really awesome paisley sea green table cloth. Does that count?
10. My greatest accomplishment has been feeling independent.
11. What are you thinking about? Whats for dinner.

Now here's my cue to turn this around on some other people! SO here are my questions:
1. Your dream?
2. Fav animal/ pet?
3. What did you do yesterday?
4. Best day of the week?
5. Song to describe your day?
6. Most embarrassing moment in 2 sentences?
7. Where would you love to travel?
8. Movie/Tv show character crush?
9. 5 words to describe you!
10. Someday I will...
11. Favorite Holiday?

Whew that was a lot of work! Now to tag those I'd love to learn more about! If I didn't tag you feel free to share anyway, I'd love to learn more.

Thrifted Find: Bohemian Tray

My friend introduced me to a adorable little thrift store downtown and after digging around I found this bad boy. I wasn't going to purchase it because at the end of the day I knew it wouldn't find much use in my dorm room but...it had my favorite colors AND the design is killer. Plus [its hard to tell from the pictures] the pink has this awesome metallic look.

It currently lives on my mini fridge and serves as my "pantry", holding various spices and my ever so important Tapatio. SO cute!

Su·per·man Sunday: Wood

I really love the look of raw unfinished wood. I like to see all the imperfections, I think it make it look SO much cooler. These little structures are beyond cool to me, and I'd love to have my ceilings in my future home look like the beamed ceiling pictured. Ahhhh I love! Just saw the shelving unit on Pinterest...can I have a wall of those please?

I can't believe it's Sunday again! Where are the weeks going? I get done with school on May 4th and it feels so weird.
